The story behind the artwork
The motif
I once heard that every one of us comes into this world with a guardian angel. I didn’t really start listening to mine until I found myself in one of the darkest periods of my life. Maybe that’s the strange thing about faith… sometimes we only start believing in something invisible when everything visible has failed us.
So I made him a deal. I told him I would place all my fears, pain, and problems into a chest – the very chest he is sitting on in this piece. He would close it, and from that moment on, they would no longer be mine to carry alone. In return, I promised him one thing: One day, I would create a piece of art for him…
Material
The entire piece is made from 2360 handmade small spruce cubes, each measuring approximately 1.8 × 1.8 cm. The whole palette consists of 12 shades of grey. A small fun fact: I didn’t use black paint at all. I worked only with a grey premix, gradually lightening it to create the full tonal range.
The white areas were finished with a pearlescent layer, which gives the piece a subtle shimmer that changes depending on the angle and the light.
The frame
I wanted the frame to elevate the whole piece and strengthen its almost sacred, monumental feeling.
The frame is made from two separate parts: a smaller, simpler inner frame set into a larger outer frame, which features a carved oak ornament finished with a silver effect.
The Piece
This piece has a very special meaning to me. The chest beneath the angel holds a lot of doubt, fear, and uncertainty.
And somehow, knowing he is sitting there reminds me that I don’t have to carry all of it alone. 🙂
